Cabinet Refacing Explained

Cabinet refacing is a cost-effective and efficient way to give your kitchen cabinets a fresh new look. Instead of completely replacing your cabinets, refacing involves updating the exterior surfaces while keeping the existing cabinet boxes intact.

Generally, the process begins by removing the doors, drawer fronts, and hardware from your existing cabinets. Then, a veneer or laminate material is applied to the exposed surfaces, giving them a brand-new appearance. This can include options such as wood veneer, thermofoil, or even paint. New hardware and accessories can be added to complete the transformation.

Cabinet refacing not only saves you money compared to a full replacement but also minimizes the disruption to your daily life since there is no need for extensive demolition or reconstruction. It is a convenient and budget-friendly option for homeowners looking to refresh their kitchen cabinets.

  1. First, you’ll be visited by a Mr. Cabinet Care professional, who will bring you a selection of high-quality samples for your perusal. You can also come to our showroom for this. You’ll see our ever popular Shaker style cabinets, traditional farmhouse styles, ornate options, contemporary choices, and much more.
  2. Once you’ve made a selection with the help of our experts, someone will come to your house to take detailed measurements of your kitchen.
  3. When it’s time to begin, existing doors and drawer fronts will be removed. The cabinet boxes and drawer boxes will stay up on the wall or on the floor, totally intact.
  4. Exterior structure will be refaced with matching materials.
  5. New door hinges and moldings will be installed.
  6. Doors and drawer fronts will be replaced with custom made new doors and drawer fronts. These will be of the design and color that you choose during your consultation with your cabinet expert.
  7. Existing hardware can be reinstalled, or new handles and drawer pulls will be added to your newly refaced cabinets. Or you may opt for no hardware at all if you’ve chosen plain Shaker style cabinets or flat panel doors and drawers.
  8. Any optional kitchen cabinet accessories, drawer organizers & storage will be installed at the end of the project.

Is Cabinet Refacing Right For You?

Now that you know more about how refacing kitchen cabinets works, you’ll need to think about whether this is a viable option for you and your remodeling project.

  • If you’re happy with the layout of your kitchen, refacing could work for you. With refacing, you won’t be making any structural changes. However, if you don’t like the way your kitchen is formatted and want to add or subtract cabinets, you may need to proceed in another direction.
  • If your kitchen remodel budget isn’t huge, you can get a whole new look for about 30 to 50 percent less than the cost of installing brand new cabinets. Refacing is a true money-saver and it’s often difficult to tell the difference between refaced cabinets and fully replaced cabinets.
  • If time is an issue, you’ll benefit from refacing, which is far quicker than replacement. Often, refacing will take just a few days where replacing – which involves removal/demolition of old cabinets – can take weeks. Furthermore, if you opt for custom cabinets, you may even add several more weeks.
  • There is far less interruption to your daily life with cabinet refacing. You won’t have to deal with having contractors in your home for weeks, which can certainly interfere with your life, especially if you’re working from home.
  • You can keep your countertops and backsplash if you don’t wish to replace them. The process of cabinet refacing won’t disturb them so there’s no need to spend extra money you’d prefer not to spend.
