Types of Kitchen Cabinets

Are you remodeling your home or just want to spruce up your kitchen? The easiest way to do this is getting new kitchen cabinets. From modern to traditional, cabinets can dramatically change the ambiance of a room.

Kitchen cabinets come in two basic styles: face frame and frameless. Face frame cabinets are what you’ll typically see in a kitchen and consist of a wood frame cabinet box with shelving inside, whereas frameless cabinets portray a more modern look only using shelving without the typical outer frame. When it comes to picking the right cabinets, you really need to know what types of cabinets are available to choose from. That’s where Orange County kitchen remodeling experts Mr. Cabinet Care can assist you. Below are the three types of kitchen cabinetry available.

In-Stock Cabinets (Set colors and sizes)

The first type of cabinets are available are called in-stock cabinets, these cabinets are generally the cabinet-of-choice for people on a limited budget. These cabinets are mass-produced and are built using standardized measurements. Although you can mix and match stock cabinets to create a custom-made look, some people have trouble finding the appropriate colors and styles to achieve the look they’re looking for. In-Stock cabinets are generally less expensive than most custom cabinets, but the quality of the cabinets can be better than some custom cabinets if comparing to particle board or mdf structures.

RTA Cabinets (if not handy with tools, may take longer & may not be able to assemble correctly, instructions can be confusing)

RTA, or “ready-to-assemble”, cabinets are those you’d come across at a home products store like Ikea. This style is meant for those who don’t mind a little DIY project and know which way to turn a screw (remember: righty-tighty, lefty-loosey). Although these cabinets are sold unassembled, they come with all the necessary parts to piece it together.  If you’re not handy with tools, RTA cabinets may not be the best choice for you. RTA cabinets can offer great option for a quick turnaround time because you buy them right in the store and build the cabinet at your convenience.

Custom & Semi-Custom Cabinets

Custom and semi-custom cabinets are a great option when it comes to cabinetry. Although they may cost more, these cabinets are specially designed to meet your specific dimensions and unique style, using materials and colors of your choice. These cabinets can also be considered better quality than the cabinets listed above because they are not mass produced and are made using your specific guidelines.

The difference between semi-custom and custom cabinets is that semi-custom cabinets are made in factories and built using standardized measurements, typically 3” increments. You have the option make adjustments to semi-custom cabinets, but the cost of changing something (no matter the size) may end up costing you more than a completely custom-made cabinet. Completely custom made cabinets add great value to your home, and don’t typically cost as much as you might think. Although they may cost more than in-stock and RTA cabinetry, you are able to add your own personal touches, door styles, accessories and colors and you’ll have a design consultant helping you through the entire process to get you exactly what you’re looking for.
