The 3 Basic Zones of Kitchen Storage

Aside from cooking and dining, the kitchen also serves as a vital area used for storing most of the stuff that we use in our everyday lives. Speaking about storage, many homeowners nowadays tend to find some difficulty in organizing things in the kitchen. Proper kitchen organizing is an essential skill for everyone to learn since it basically avoids further hassle and delay in doing household chores.

However, no matter how hard you try, organizing takes a lot of patience to master as you have to do it on a regular basis. Before you start with putting things around where they should be, you must be familiar with the basic zones that are suitable enough for storing all of your kitchen tools and equipment the right way:

Zone 1: The area around the refrigerator

There are several reasons as to why the area around the refrigerator is considered to be an optimal space for kitchen storage. You often go to the fridge not only to grab some quick snacks but to also get some of the main ingredients you use for cooking meals.

You can place either small or larger cabinets near the fridge to store dry goods that usually works well with refrigerated foods. Examples of these goods include cereals (consumed primarily with milk), or mustard (used with other frozen condiments).

Other than goods, cleaning materials can also fit quite well if you would put a narrow closet just beside the refrigerator. This closet is especially useful for housing your mops, brooms, dust pans, etc.

Zone 2: The area around the sink

The area where you typically do most of your busiest chores is no other than the kitchen sink. Most households today prefer specific layout wherein the sink is positioned right between the fridge and the stove. This formation is effective when doing food preparations and cleaning.

Since the sink is the place where you put all the dirty dishes, this becomes the best area for putting your trash bin. If you have a set of drawers placed below the sink, then you could put most of your dishes, and kitchen wares on it.

It is also a good idea to reserve a space for cutting boards and your knife racks if the sink is installed adjacent to the countertops.

Zone 3: The area around the range or oven

The most tricky storage zone among the three, the area around the range or oven is used to store specific stuff that you’ll need for cooking. Always take some cautions for putting anything in this area as this is the place where fires can usually get out of hand.

This zone is good for placing your cooking appliances such as toasters, portable grills, bread bins, and breadboards. You should also set aside a little space or shelves to house serving bowls and storage platters so that it would be easy for you to get food from the stove quickly.
