1. Consider Your Kitchen’s Layout
Placement is easily the most important consideration in kitchen island design. As a centerpiece of a heavily used room, you need to ensure that the island is complementing your workflow rather than impeding it.
Home designers often speak about the “kitchen work triangle”. The idea is that most kitchen tasks are done at one of three places: the sink, the refrigerator, and the stove. You want to be able to move between all three easily, so be sure that the island and your appliances are positioned accordingly.
2. Account for Seating
One of the best parts about having a gorgeous kitchen island is the opportunity to pull up a bar-stool and relax. But if you do intend to sit at your island, you’ll need to take some additional measurements into account during the planning stages.
A standard kitchen island overhang is about 12 inches: while you can extend it further if you’d like, you may need additional supports added. Allow for a couple of feet between bar-stools to ensure that everyone has sufficient elbowroom. Nothing ruins what should be lovely seating faster than feeling cramped!

There are no hard and fast rules about what a kitchen island has to look like. You can play around with features like shape, finish, and countertop design to develop a look that matches your kitchen aesthetic.
