When to Reface and When to Replace Kitchen Cabinets

Are your kitchen cabinets looking a little outdated? Is there paint peeling, squeaky doors, missing hinges, or damaged wood? Or are you simply sick of not being able to reach the top shelf or fit items into preferred places?

If so, you might be ready to tackle a kitchen cabinet refacing or replacing project. But how do you know which one to choose? There are pros to each option, and one choice might make more sense than another based on your personal situation, budget, and desires.

Let’s take a look at these factors to help determine if it’s best to reface or replace that old kitchen cabinetry.

Refacing

Refacing is a great, inexpensive, and low-hassle way to give those old kitchen cabinets a new lease on life. If your cabinetry doesn’t have any of the following, a refacing project might be the better choice.

  •      Rot
  •      Mold
  •      Water damage
  •      Broken pieces
  •      Misalignment
  •      Low-quality materials
  •      Poor layout/function

Refacing cabinets consists of replacing your doors and drawer fronts with new custom-made doors and drawer fronts. It also includes exchanging old hardware for new knobs and pulls, which really makes the look come together. This type of a makeover can be a great, wallet-saving way to get a new look without having to tear down and rebuild your cabinetry. And at the end of the project, it can be difficult to distinguish between cabinetry that has been replaced and cabinetry that has merely been refaced.

Replacing

If you live in an old home and your cabinets are nearing the end of their life, replacing may be the best option for you. If your cabinets have succumbed to any of the ailments on the list in the previous section, it’s well-worth it to just call it done and start anew.

It’s also a great time to restructure your space altogether and build your dream kitchen. If you find yourself struggling with a poor layout, choosing to replace your cabinets offers you the option to create a more functional space with the storage and flow you need.

Perhaps you want pull-out drawers that glide out on tracks, built-in lazy Susans and custom wine racks, larger cabinets, adjustable shelves, or a hidden garbage can and recycle bin. Anything you can dream up can be incorporated, including custom-sized cabinets that fit snugly around your appliances and offer an easier reach into their depths, and corner cabinets that are actually useful.

Take some time to consider your current cabinets. Remember that every homeowner has different needs and circumstances, and a kitchen contractor will be able to help you with your unique situation. Maybe some of the cabinetry needs refacing and some of it needs replacing. Whatever the case, you can come up with a plan that makes your kitchen more enjoyable to work in while also increasing your home’s value and appeal at the same time.
